45 years ago, Margie and Judson Wingard didn’t set out to create a big business. It developed out of their love of plants and their desire to help others enjoy them just as much as they did. 

 

The seed was planted in the late 1960s, when the Wingards began propagating azaleas for their yard. Thanks to their green thumbs, they found themselves with more than they could use, so they set up a roadside stand with a hand-painted sign advertising "azaleas for sale 50 cents." (CLICK HERE)

    Walk The Dam

    Wingard's Nursery & Garden Center is proud to present this fourth in a series of dated ornaments that depict the scenes and history of Lake Murray, South Carolina. If you drive across the Lake Murray Dam, just about any time during the daylight, any time of year, you will see people "walking the dam." The sight of folks of all ages, shapes and sizes enjoying a walk or run along the water's edge is reminiscent of boardwalks along the beach in many parts of the country. This is a relatively new outlet for recreation in the Midlands of South Carolina. The walkway offers spectacular views of Lake Murray and the downtown Columbia skyline 11 miles away.

    BOMB ISLAND, LAKE MURRAY

    During WWII, an island in the middle of the lake, now known as Bomb Island, was used by B25 Bomber pilots for target practice. Our 2010 ornament honors and remembers our WWII veterans and the role of Lake Murray in these training missions. The B25 on the ornament is a replica of the bomber that crashed into the lake and was floated to the surface in 2005.
